INGERSOLL-RAND 1,800 HP DIESEL-ELECTRIC TRANSFER LOCOMOTIVE

The I-R 1,800 hp, C-C Transfer Locomotive was built in 1936 by Ingersoll-Rand for the Illinois Central Railroad and numbered 9200. It utilized two of I-R's 900 hp four-stroke diesel engines which were direct coupled to two International G.E.C. D.C. generators. These provided power to the tractions motors. Maximum horsepower was 1,800 at 550 rpm. The locomotive's maximum speed was 60 mph, and maximum tractive effort was rated at 80,000 lb. The unit weighed 143 tons or 34,2000 lbs. Driver diameter was 39". It was scrapped in 1947.

This locomotive was the second of three demonstrators supplied to the Illinois Central Railroad in 1936. The first was the 2,000 hp GE-Busch-Sulzer numbered 9201. It was powered by a two-stroke V-10 cylinder engine and produced 2,000 bhp at 550 rpm. Co-builder General Electric built the locomotive carbody and also provided electronics such as the main generator and the six traction motors. A third locomotive, the EMC T,  was powered by two Winton engines providing 1,800hp total.
All three locomotives were scrapped by June 1947.
