EMD SD70MAC-H DIESEL-ELECTRIC LOCOMOTIVE

The EMD SD70MAC-H is a remanufactured C-C diesel-electric locomotive made for Metra. These locomotives were manufactured by Progress Rail by using existing EMD SD70MAC freight locomotives and upgrading and re-configuring them for passenger use. All components used were either refurbished, upgraded or new. The newly remanufactured locomotives were designated as SD70MAC-H passenger locomotives.

In 2019, Metra approved a $71 million contract to purchase 15 remanufactured locomotives from Progress Rail Locomotives with options to buy up to 27 additional locomotives should more funding became available. The first units were delivered in 2022.

The remanufactured locomotives are similar to Metra’s F59 locomotives so Metra is using the same parts inventory, eliminating the need for different training and maintenance programs.

Utilizing the EMD 16-710-G3A engine, the SD70MAC-Hs are rated 4,300-hp (a 34% increase). Also, the SD70MAC-H has a microprocessor-controlled brake system.

The SD70MAC-H locomotives meet the EPA’s Tier 3 emissions standards. By replacing 42 of Metra’s locomotives that are rated Tier 0+ with 42 Tier 3 locomotives eliminates 61 tons of nitrous oxide emissions every year, the equivalent of taking 6,600 cars off the road.
