History

On August 7, 2013, the Montreal, Maine & Atlantic (MMA) company declared bankruptcy in the United States and Canada following the Lac-Mégantic train accident. This tragedy caused the death of 47 people and damages estimated at $200 million. In December 2013, Fortress Investment Group , through its subsidiary Railroad Acquisition Holdings (RAH), made an offer to acquire the assets of MMA. In January of 2014, the investment group won the auction for the sum of 15.7 million. The following month, RAH announced that it was forming the new entity Central Maine & Quebec Railway to become the operator of the acquired railway lines.

On June 4, 2020, Canadian Pacific finalized acquisition of the CMQ 4.
